Semiotics / LIIAR Analysis
The image I have chosen to analyse (which is on the left) is bright and colourful which makes it very appealing and eye catching. I am going to analyse this poster by using LIIAR.
Firstly, the L in this key word means language. In this poster I can see that many different conventions have been used to convey a message to the audience. Some examples are a main image, a slogan, corresponding colours and a few more. I am going to write about the three I have mentioned in more detail. The main image of this poster allows the audience to see how confident you should be. The main concept of this poster is directed at men and we can see that the male in this poster is looking directly at the camera which is known as a direct mode of address. Because the man is looking at the camera it represents that he is trying to get the attention of the viewer and is trying to engage them. The way the man is looking at the camera also insinuates that he is enjoying what he is going through and he is trying to show that other men will enjoy it too and they would be in his situation if they bought the perfume. However, the women in this poster is not looking at the camera, she is looking at the male, this tells the audience that if you buy the product you will be confident and you will easily get women. She also seems completely mesmerized in the man which shows that she has a love interest in the man. The poster is also very sexual as the male is topless which makes it more interesting for the viewer. Next, the slogan tries to tell the audience that any men who wear pink are real men and that men who don't, aren't real. The slogan could also mean that only real men get women. You could say this because pink could mean women and so if you wear pink you are a real men and you will get women. From this the audience could infer that men don't always have to be masculine, they can bring out a different side and women would still be attracted to them. Lastly, the bright corresponding colours tell the audience that this poster is very intimate and seductive. From the colours used the audience can see that the objective is to show passion, love and affection. The reason this poster has used corresponding colours is to make it simple for the audience to see, so that there is not too much to look at, letting the audience focus on the main point of the poster.
We can see that the Institution in this poster is a perfume organisation, this organisation will most likely have had to get a professional photographer for this poster, also they would have had to get models from a modelling organisation and editors from a computer organisation. All these organisation affect the final product because if there was no one modelling in the photo then it would be bland and boring as there wouldn't be much to look at. Also, without any editors the final product wouldn't look good or even professional so no one would want to buy it as they think it may just be a perfume that someone is trying to sell just to get money.

There is some ideology in this poster. Some values that are explicit are the slogan, this is very clear to understand and tells the audience that only real men wear pink. Another value is that this perfume makes women more attracted to men as the main image is very sexual and flirtatious. On the other hand, there are also some implicit values, one is that it's not obvious that men should be confident even if when they are wearing more feminine colours. I would personally say that the target audience for this poster is young men in their 20's or 30's. This type of perfume looks as if it's more expensive than others and that it wouldn't be used daily it would be used for going out for a special occasion or for when someone is out to try and attract women. Many men who like to party or go clubbing (mainly men who like to have fun) would buy this product. I consider all of this because the photo isn't very age appropriate for younger people and mainly young adults are the type that party and have fun so they are more likely to buy this product.
The R in LIIAR means Representation. In this poster there are two individuals that appear, by having one female and one male it makes the poster more appealing and more people would want to look at it because it shows that both genders are involved. The way the two individuals are modelling shows that both genders should be affectionate and
close to one another. One thing that this image doesn't show is that men should respect women and not just think they will own them just because they are wearing this perfume. There are only some denotations on this poster but each different one you see has many different connotations, for example what the slogan may genuinely mean, it may not actually mean that you are a real man only if you wear pink it could have different meanings.
Some extra points to this poster is that the perfume that is being advertised is shown at the bottom right hand corner and is also used in the main image. This allows the viewer to see what the perfume looks like in real life rather than just on it's own as it could have been edited while on it's own to look nicer. Having it at the bottom of the page allows the viewer to still see what the advertisement is actually about but it also allows them to see the main image which is what is mainly enticing the viewer. This poster could have a story behind it, this story could be that the man eventually bought the perfume after debating whether it was good or not and he may have gone to a party one night and used the perfume, eventually he ended up with a women at the end of the night. Lastly, the word Denotation means the thing that you are looking at right in front of you and Connotation means the meanings behind the denotations. Overall, the poster is alluring and appealing to look at which is what is needed to attract customers.
