Social Class and Demographic of my Product
A certain genre of music can be listened to by anyone so you can't always automatically assume that a certain social class will only listen to a certain genre of music. The genre I am doing for my magazine is Punk Rock and from the research I have done I have been able to see that mainly people from the lower class and middle class listen to Punk Rock music, this doesn't mean that people in the upper class don't listen to this genre of music as well, people in the lower class just listen to it more often than people in the upper class.
From the research I have done I am mainly going to aim my magazine at people in the middle class because I know that they would enjoy this genre of music the most out of all of the social classes. I will also put in some elements that would entice the lower and upper class to try and make those classes attracted to the magazine. On top of that, I will try to mainly aim this magazine at the middle class.
I listen to Punk Rock music in my own time so I know what the target audience for my magazine would want to see because as a fan of this genre myself I will know what I want to see on the magazine. When creating this magazine I will put things in the magazine that I know I would like to see but I will also do some research and see what other things people would like to see if I haven't put them in. I will try to use as many Punk Rock elements as possible to try and entice people that like this genre of music, I will use the colours that are usually associated with this genre, use a certain images, use certain fonts and also give what I think if the most important information that people want to know about.
Pricing of my magazine is very important because it will depend on who my social class target audience is, I have already decided who my social class target audience is which is the middle class, so I will have to put it at a reasonable price for people that are in the middle class. From the research I have done I have been able to see that most magazines that are aimed at people in the lower class are priced from £2-£3, magazines that are aimed at people in the middle class are priced from £4-£5 and magazines that are aimed at people in the upper class are priced from £5-£7. I am aiming my magazine at people in the middle class so I will want to keep the price about the same as what a normal magazines aimed at the middle class are priced. I am planning on pricing my magazine £4.99. I have chosen to price it at this because I want people in the middle class to be able to buy this magazine and still have money to spend on other things, I think I have priced it reasonably for any people in the lower class that would want to buy it. I wouldn't expect people in the lower class to buy my magazine every time a new issue came out because they wouldn't be able to afford it so I think they would be able to buy it every so often. People from the upper class would be able to buy this magazine with no problems because they would have the money to afford it.
Again, I listen to this genre of music myself so I know what people will want to see and will want to have in the magazine, so I will also know what gifts they would want to see in the magazine and what kind of competitions that would like to be involved in. Most Punk Rock magazines give out items that relate to Punk Rock because the creators know that the readers will want to have something that is associated with the magazine that they are buying. In my magazine I am going to either put a CD as a free gift or I might give out some Plectrums. I have chosen these to put as my free gifts because I know people that listen to Punk Rock music like listening to other Punk Rock bands they have never heard before so the free CD would allow them to listen to other bands and the Plectrums may encourage someone to start playing guitar because they know that the main instrument that is associated with Punk Rock is an electrical guitar. Some of the prizes I might involve in my magazine are; winning a signed instrument from a band member or winning a chance to meet a band.
Choosing a certain social class for my magazine is very important because it allows me to choose what information I am going to put in the feature stories. I have chosen to aim my magazine at people in the middle class which means I will have to put information in my feature stories that will appeal to people in the middle class. My feature stories should try to entice people by giving them information that I think is only relevant to them and that they will enjoy reading about because if they knew that they weren't going to enjoy reading about it they wouldn't buy the magazine.
